Korean teen kills marks-obsessed mom
2011-11-24 15:18 Seoul - A teenager in education-obsessed South Korea allegedly killed his mother because she hounded him to come top in exams, and then hid her body at their home for eight months, police said on Thursday.Police have sought a formal warrant to arrest the 18-year-old, who is thought to have killed his mother in March by stabbing her in the neck, according to a detective at a police station in Seoul's Gwangjin district.
The officer, who declined to be identified, confirmed details in a Yonhap news agency report.
The crime came to light when the boy's father, who lived apart from his wife, paid a rare visit home and found his son's behaviour suspicious.
After he reported his suspicions to police, they went to the house and found the mother's body hidden in her room.
Police said the 51-year-old mother pressed her son to get better exam scores even though his academic performance was already good. Sometimes she did not feed him or let him go to bed.
The student, who ranked about 4 000th nationwide in a rehearsal test for the college entrance exam, tampered with the score card to have his rank read 62nd out of some 700 000 competitors.
But his mother was not satisfied even with the doctored ranking. On the eve of the killing, she beat him with a baseball bat and a golf club and urged him to rise to the top.
The suspect was terrified that his mother would discover the faked exam score because she planned to visit his school the following day, police said.
Schoolchildren can come under huge pressure in South Korea, where entry to a prestigious college is seen as key to securing a prestigious job.
